Anglo American Plc Chief Executive Mark Cutifani (55) will have a routine hip operation toward the end of the month, the London-based mining company has said in a statement.

Cutifani “will be out of action for a couple of days,” according to spokesman Pranill Ramchander. The Australian CEO was not due to speak at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town from 3 to 6 February.

Anglo American replaced former CEO Cynthia Carroll with Cutifani in April last year after cost overruns at its $8.8 billion Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil.

Carroll had an operation following a hip injury she suffered during a horse riding accident in 2012.
