A manhunt has been launched for the killers of eight illegal miners at a gold mine in Benoni, reports City Press.
“At this stage the motive for the killing is unknown. All eight were shot in the upper body. The bodies have not yet been identified,” SAPS Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini was quoted as saying.
All the victims are believed to be from Lesotho. The bodies were found in three locations at the mine near Daveyton in Benoni.
Near a mine dump
Five were found by security guards on Saturday near a mine dump. Another body was located in a field near the shaft entrance, while two more bodies were found inside the actual mine shaft.
It is feared that the latest murders indicate a deadly intensification of the turf war between Basotho and Zimbabwean miners vying for control of Gauteng’s disused gold mines.
