Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) has confirmed that as a result of the stoppage at its Rustenburg, Union and Amandelbult mines, it has lost about 3 886 oz of platinum production. The stoppage was caused by an incident that saw a violent encounter between the Workers Committee and the National Union of Mineworkers on 18 February.
Employees at these mining operations embarked on an illegal work stoppage following an incident at Siphumelele mine in Rustenburg in which 15 employees sustained injuries.
Amplats said that it was engaged in constructive discussions with the Department of Mineral Resources, the Chamber of Mines and organised labour in order to ensure a safe environment for employees across the platinum industry.
The platinum major announced that workers had since returned to work at all the affected operations and mines were fully operational.
