The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) North West’s provincial leadership says it is implementing a campaign programme agreed to, at national level, to defend the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the federation, highlighting some of the worker exploitation practices by mining companies in the North West province.
The march has been organised by COSATU against the Impala Platinum management for what COSATU said is their union bashing practices.
The federation said that the Impala Platinum management has applied double standards by recognizing a union which did not have a membership threshold in March/ April 2012 and derecognized the NUM, claiming that the NUM has lost its threshold.
Meanwhile, the company has banned the NUM and its stewards from operating on its premises when the recognition agreements were still valid, and COSATU said that this is the worst kind of union bashing and the application of double standard by the Impala Platinum management.
In addition, COSATU noted that it is highly disturbed that both the Department of Mineral Resources as well as the Department of Labour have failed to investigate the transgression of labour laws by Impala Platinum, despite all these incidents having being reported by the NUM.
