Improved overall performances by its furnaces has resulted in JSE-listed ferrochrome producer Merafe Resources achieving a 3% higher output in production volumes for Q1 2013, compared to the Q1 2012 period.

The company admitted that its Rustenburg furnaces exceeded expectations in terms of production volumes and efficiencies which Merafe said, can be attributed to the successful commissioning and ramp up of the Tswelopele pelletising plant.

Merafe achieved 67 000 t for the quarter, while European benchmark prices for ferrochrome peaked at 127USc/lb in Q2 2013, compared to 112.5USc/lb in Q1 2013, a 13% increase.
