Diversified miner Anglo American says it welcomes the announcement made by the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma.

In a statement, Zuma offered support for the mining industry, including moves to facilitate meaningful interactions between government, labour and the mining companies.

“I very much welcome the support and leadership being provided to the mining industry by President Jacob Zuma. We all share a common goal of achieving a stable, viable and long-term future for the mining industry. The President’s statement clearly recognises the imperative for growth of the mining industry and the country as a whole. It is critical that South Africa remains competitive globally, whilst safeguarding the long-term sustainability of our businesses for the benefit of all our stakeholders,” said Anglo American’s CEO Mark Cutifani.

“This is a critical time for the mining industry and Anglo American will continue to work in partnership with the government, organised labour and other stakeholders to achieve an outcome that delivers value for our shareholders, which forms the basis for long-term economic inclusion and transformation across South Africa,” he added.
