Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) confirms that approximately 2400 employees at its Thembelani mine in Rustenburg were prevented from exiting underground by a group of employees.
The platinum miner further confirmed that this was as a result of the suspension of four shop stewards for inappropriate behaviour, which it said was against Amplats’ behavioural procedure.
“Our protection services teams are on the ground attending to the situation. Management is currently engaging with recognised Unions at regional and at head office levels to resolve the situation,” the company said in a statement.
Amplats said it had issued communication to all its employees informing them that there is zero tolerance to any illegal actions which include intimidation, threats of violence and assault, warning that any employee who instigates or participates in any of the illegal activities is reminded that the company will not hesitate to take the appropriate measures and employees will be subjected to disciplinary action which could lead to dismissal.
