Next year will be a “major milestone” in the assessment of the Mining Charter, Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu said at the Chamber of Mines annual general meeting held on 5 November at the Johannesburg Country Club.
“The Department has commenced with its process in assessing industry performance in this regard. I would like to request the Chamber to cooperate in the process for which the country is eagerly awaiting the outcome,” said Shabangu.
Delivering the outgoing president’s review, Anglo American chief executive Mark Cutifani said it was “imperative” for mining industry leaders and executives to continue forging relations, and to engage with labour and government.
“The change in trajectory of this industry starts with everyone in this room; let us leave our narrow interests behind us when we leave here today. Let us act in a way that truly puts South Africa first,” said Cutifani.
