Lonmin has become the latest platinum miner to declare a force majeure. That means it won’t meet its contractual obligations to accept goods and pay suppliers – but its customers won’t be affected. Lonmin made world news in 2012 when police gunned down 34 strikes in one day at it’s mine – and AMCU’s rallying cry of R12 500 dates from that time. As the current strike marked 10 weeks today, the union marched to Lonmin’s offices at Melrose Arch, north of Johannesburg.
