The African National Congress (ANC) prefers it if a local company acquires the assets being put for sale by Anglo American Platinum.
SA mining champion
“Our dream is to have a South African mining champion,” ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe, who formerly headed the National Union of Mineworkers, told reporters, according to Reuters.
However, the ANC stressed that it would not influence the outcome of the transaction in any way.
Not a choice of the ANC
“It would be quite important to have a South African company buying those assets, but it is not a choice of the ANC. We are not going to go to Amplats and say select this consortium,” said Mantashe.
The ANC has a difficult balancing act to maintain in attracting foreign investment in the local mining industry, while encouraging local participation.
