A community in Roodeport says it is standing together to oppose a mining company’s application for a 30-year mining rights licence in the area.

According to the Roodepoort Record, West Wits Mining Company has applied for the license from the Department of Mineral Resources, which will see the company operating in parts of Florida Park, Hamberg, Georginia, Creswell Park, Roodepoort CBD, Matholesville and Witpoortjie.

According to the Roodepoort Record, the company’s intention is to construct an open cast mine.

The approved application by the department for the miner’s application will grant the company permissions to mine gold, silver, sandstone and aggregate.

Community members say that the mining company is a financially driven project and the residents have a lot more at stake, including social and economic disruption, pollution, and the health of both humans and animals.
